After school activities
After-school activities take place every day after school. Registration for the activities takes place 3 times per school year, to ensure that students can switch and try out different things that they might be interested in. Activities which have been offered include: Sewing, Arts and Crafts, Basketball, Photography, Yoga, Football, Dance, Crocheting and Embroidery, Dutch, Watercolour Lab, Music, MAD Science, and Swimming.

Approaches to Learning
In order to support lifelong learning, IST recognizes that it is important to help students “learn how to learn”. This is developed using five Approaches to Learning:
Self-management skills
Research and Investigation Skills
Social Skills
Communication Skills
Thinking Skills
These skills are developed and practised in and out of the classroom, allowing learners to take an active part in their own learning.

Arts Studio
The Art Studio is a hub of the IST community, well-supplied with all of the materials learners might need to endlessly create. Teachers use the Studio as a workshop for students’ artistic endeavours, as well as their cultural explorations. The studio also sees plenty of use after school, hosting activities such as Arts and Crafts, Crocheting and Embroidery, as well as the Watercolour Lab.

Be a part of the community
A meeting place for the international community. Local community. Twente… Welcome to our community! Everyone should feel welcome at International School Twente. We want our school to be a meeting place for the international community. This promotes international-mindedness, and supports new families to settle and feel at home. We see the diversity in backgrounds and values as an opportunity for international-mindedness and a way to connect so that everyone feels part of IST.
IST is a ‘community’ school that connects between the international and the local community. As a community school, IST has a role to play in the local area, from our local neighbourhood artists, who help us decorate our school, to the University of Twente, where many of our parents work and study. By including the Dutch language and culture as part of our curriculum, we encourage and enable our students to participate in the local community. IST cooperates with local cultural organisations, sports clubs and child care providers.

Dutch Language Acquisition
In recognition of the IST’s context in the Dutch community, students at IST take part in Dutch lessons two times per week aimed at introducing and helping them integrate with the Dutch language and culture. With the support of specialist teachers from within the Dutch teaching community, IST aims to develop the language skills of all its learners to be able to find their way in the Netherlands.

ELA Lessons
English as an Additional Language
English is the primary language of instruction at IST. Our goal is to provide students with a strong foundation in English language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. However, the school makes the distinction that it is a school for the learning of English and not a school where learning is English. We recognize that all students, regardless of origin, are English language learners with skills in each of these areas to be developed.
In accordance with our approach to all students as language learners, learners who do not yet have the levels of English required to follow the curriculum are placed in the age-appropriate mainstream classroom with the other students. In this way, they are encouraged to work with peers and participate in learning activities. Teachers differentiate their instruction to support individual learners in their language development. All teachers have experience teaching ELA students. In addition, students with needs identified by the school are supported through specialised ELA instruction.

Fantastic Foxes
In Year 4 students take a big step forward in their independence, self-management, and responsibility. Our classroom is a place where students begin to truly understand themselves as learners. Each day begins with a calm, focused routine that encourages organisation and ownership of learning. Students check their personal timetables, prepare materials for the day ahead, and often reflect on a goal they've set for themselves—whether it's related to an IB Learner Profile attribute or a personal learning habit. The idea of growth mindset is central to everything we do in the Fantastic Foxes. We know that mistakes help us learn, challenges help us grow, and feedback is something to embrace. Students are encouraged to see themselves as capable problem-solvers, developing resilience and a positive attitude that shapes their everyday approach to learning. Throughout the week, students engage in a range of subjects including specialist classes. Inquiry-based learning continues to be at the heart of our approach. Students investigate meaningful concepts through hands-on experiences, group projects, and independent research, often linking learning across multiple subjects such as science, history, geography, and personal education.
By Year 4, students take greater responsibility for managing their home learning and materials, as well as planning and carrying out longer-term assignments. They regularly reflect on their progress, collaborate with peers, and present their ideas to the class with increasing confidence and clarity. We also prioritise well-being and balance. Our day includes time for movement breaks, outdoor play, and mindfulness practices. The Fantastic Foxes are known for being curious, kind, and open-minded thinkers who work hard, support one another, and aren’t afraid to take risks in their learning. We are proud of how much we grow during our time in Year 4—both academically and as people.

Gnomes
Our early years classroom is a place of discovery where inquisitive young minds have the space to inquire and develop through play and developmentally appropriate activities. We begin our day checking in with how we are feeling and choosing an activity to help us transition from home to school. We then meet on the carpet where we build literacy and numeracy skills through songs, finger plays and stories. Children are encouraged to take initiative over their learning through choice in literacy and numeracy centers. They build social skills by working with others and initiating and engaging in play with others in the classroom. Throughout the day we focus on developing our self-management skills by tidying up after an activity, taking care of our personal belongings, and taking care of our own needs. This play-based approach allows each child to be a curious, confident, and caring learner, building a foundation for a lifetime of exploration.

Gym
At IST our students have two moments for the gym: one lesson per week in English with the classroom teacher in our school gym, and the second lesson with a specialist gym teacher in a larger nearby gym hall. To enhance students’ understanding of Dutch, this lesson is conducted in Dutch.

House Points
To encourage students to practice and demonstrate their development of the Learner Profile, students and teachers in Primary are assigned to one of four IST houses - Red, Green, Yellow and Blue. The House System encourages students to interact with other students across the school and provides competitive opportunities for intramural sports, academic merit awards, and other competitions.

ICT
To successfully navigate our modern technology-driven society, students need to acquire a wide range of specific ICT (Information and Communication Technology) skills, as well as the ability to keep adapting to ever-faster changing technology. ICT is used by teachers and students as a means of enhancing learning, from researching online databases to receiving bespoke tutoring via AI, but are also goals in themselves, and play as important a role as literacy and numeracy in the modern school curriculum.

Inquiry
Inquiry is an approach to learning which stands at the foundation of IST. It invites students to consider artefacts and case studies in order to form questions before investigating, researching and experimenting, in order to develop their responses and understanding. Inquiry always starts with children’s own understanding, which is developed by building connections between old and new understandings taken from the inquiry. It allows students to be actively involved in their own learning and to appropriately develop their own understanding of the world.

Learner Profile
International Mindedness is not just about learning about other cultures and languages. It is a way of thinking that allows us to understand and work together for a better world. The IB Learner profile sets out the characteristics that strongly contribute to this vision of internationally minded individuals who actively help to better their world.
The ten traits of the Learner Profile are:
Inquirers - “I ask questions”
Thinkers - “I use my head”
Communicators - “I share my ideas”
Risk Takers - “I try new things”
Knowledgeable - “I know it”
Principled - “I do what is right”

Library
Students have a weekly Library session where they are welcome to explore new books, as well as check out books to read at home. The library is stocked to provide the students with a variety of reading to match their ages, and interests. The library is also used by teachers to support their units of inquiry with relevant reading and to extend children’s interest in the concepts being studied.

Lucky Ducks
In Year 5 while we have our daily schedule, there is lots of room for flexibility. We usually start off a day off with a QOTD (Question of the Day). During this time, we practice writing coherently, but also creatively.
These questions are decided by us before the beginning of the different terms. We then either move onto Math or Inquiry. In Math, we are expanding our foundational knowledge by building on multiplication and division concepts and how they apply to other mathematical areas, like Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Statistics, and Geometry. In Inquiry, we embark on our learning journeys through many projects and collaborative tasks on a given topic. In these lessons, we explore concepts in history, science, and more. At the end of our projects, we ensure to reflect on our journey, our individual strengths and what we can do better next time.

Mission
Our Mission is to provide excellent international primary and secondary education to students from diverse backgrounds.
IST’s Vision is constructed around the four pillars:
Global Citizens: We offer our students essential stepping stones to learn to become a successful and happy global citizen.
Inquisitive Learners: We aim to develop inquisitive minds that have a love for learning and therefore excel in personal and academic growth.
A Community School: We cultivate a school community to provide our students with an inclusive and caring environment within which they can build strong friendships that will last throughout their international lifetime.

Music
The students of IST Primary learn about music once per week. Singing is the starting point of these lessons, during which the focus is on composition, performance, listening and appreciation skills. The students learn about music theory, such as rhythmic and melodic notation and solfa, but will also learn how to use graphic notation. These music concepts are taught through games and songs. Although singing is the starting point, students will learn how to play a variety of instruments as well. Most importantly: music brings us together! Music helps us to understand each other without using words and even helps with learning new languages.

Before going into the classroom, students first hang their backpacks in the hallway.
In the Year 3, students are encouraged to develop into engaged, self-reflective learners. Every day starts with a defined routine that encourages responsibility and self-management as soon as they step into the classroom. They get to choose an IB Learner Profile attribute to concentrate on throughout the day, promoting mindfulness and purposeful personal development.
After taking their seats, students work on "Today’s Number," a numeracy-focused exercise meant to stimulate their mathematical thinking while giving their classmates a chance to arrive and get settled. This orderly but adaptable start to the day contributes to a positive atmosphere.
Students are exposed to Inquiry-based learning, which is central to the PYP (Primary Years Programme) framework, which is the foundation of our teaching and learning. Students work individually and cooperatively in pairs or small groups on project-based assignments as they investigate large concepts through transdisciplinary themes.
Critical thinking is actively fostered through the use of Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats (thinking outside the box) by enabling students to consider problems and concepts from various angles. This method fosters empathy and the development of well-rounded reasoning abilities.

Primary Years Programme
Learning at IST uses the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, and is organized under 6 themes, which are global, timeless and relevant. They guide the learning process and are shared throughout the school.
The six themes are:
Who We Are:
Where We Are in Place and Time:
How We Express Ourselves:
How the World Works:
How We Organize Ourselves:
Sharing the Planet:
Learning within the themes is kept significant, relevant, challenging and engaging by the use of Seven Key Concepts: Form, Function, Causation, Perspective, Connection, Responsibility and Change. These Key concepts help teachers plan appropriate learning goals from the curriculum, in order to ensure learning across the 6 units is sufficient and appropriate.

SEN Support
Our Special Educational Needs (SEN) support performs various tasks that support the school, its students and its teachers. At IST Primary the SEN support works in three different fields: focus on learning and development, support and care, data monitoring and reflection.
We work where we can to create a stimulating learning environment for our students. Sometimes external help might be necessary to address certain issues, so our SEN support is also part of the ‘External support route’ network which includes our school nurse, a social worker, an educational coach and an ‘orthopedagoog’.

School Fruit
IST participates in the school fruit, along with many other Dutch schools. This program is funded by the Dutch government to ensure healthy eating in schools. This means that every year from November to April our school receives school fruit 3 days a week that we provide for all of our students. Fruits and vegetables vary with the following: apples, pears, carrots, cucumbers, grapes, watermelon, grapefruit, pineapple, and radishes. With this we ask our parent community to help, where they come in and wash and prepare the snack to be passed to all classrooms so that students can enjoy during their snack time.

Stage
Each year different classrooms perform a School Play. Our goal is that every student has multiple opportunities to participate in a play throughout their time in IST, so that all children can deepen their understanding and appreciation of drama arts, and to ensure everyone gets their time to shine on stage. Each play is the result of months of rehearsal and practice, with the final performance then taking place in the evening where all the parents of students performing are invited to watch.

Study Hall
An Internationally Minded School
We embrace all diversities and similarities of cultures around the world. By learning from and with each other we learn to appreciate, respect and understand each other and the world around us. We don’t always need to agree as long as we can talk about our views and as long as we are free to give our opinions. We want to develop self-aware and responsible world citizens who are able to be meaningful for our society with the knowledge, skills and understanding they experienced throughout their primary school period. Our school is a warm and safe social environment in which we stimulate our learners’ development and curiosity. Learners are responsible for their own learning and the learning of each other, which happens through investigation, experimentation and reflection under the guidance and coaching of a teacher. Throughout the process we celebrate success and we develop a love for learning.

The Parent Community
Parents are an important part of the learning community at IST. New families to the school quickly make new friends who help them navigate the challenges of moving to a new region. The school is grateful to have help during special events and outings from our parents, some of whom also act as “classroom parents” to pass on important notices from the school.

Toucans
We start our week by writing a journal entry every Monday. We love writing and
illustrating, the journal is a great keepsake to take home at the end of the year. During the day the students participate in Maths, lots of phonics related lessons, creative writing, handwriting and PYP lessons which can have elements of Maths, literacy and subjects such as science, social studies, geography, history and personal education. Our lessons are very often hands-on. We learn and remember better by doing and exploring and not just by listening. During the year the students also get to present home learning assignments to the rest of the class. We practice public speaking and presenting this way. On long days we have a snack and lunch in our classroom and we get to go play outside twice. We always check our playground schedule to see if it is our turn out on the football field or on the swing. We also get to ride bikes out on the playground during lunch break. Super fun! During the day we often take a break to stretch, dance to a song or exercise together in our classroom. We love being active and staying healthy. Our ELA students are participating in extra English lessons during some of our days. We all love Wednesday: Gym Day! We get to go to the big gym and our teacher always has the funnest games and obstacle courses set up for us. This is a year filled with phonetic sounds, numeracy up to 100 and lots of reading. By the end of the year we have learned so much!

Welcome
Welcome to IST!
A meeting place for the international community. Local community. Twente… Welcome to our community! Everyone should feel welcome at International School Twente. We want our school to be a meeting place for the international community. This promotes international-mindedness and supports new families in settling in and feeling at home. We see the diversity in backgrounds and values as an opportunity for international-mindedness and a way to connect so that everyone feels part of IST.
IST is a ‘community’ school that connects the international and the local community. As a community school, IST has a role to play in the local area, from our local neighbourhood artists, who help us decorate our school, to the University of Twente, where many of our parents work and study. By including the Dutch language and culture as part of our curriculum, we encourage and enable our students to participate in the local community. IST cooperates with local cultural organisations, sports clubs and childcare providers.

Wise Wolves
In Year 6, inquiry-based learning is at the center of our class. The students are challenged to extend their thinking through a variety of activities and challenges that require them to think outside of the box and come up with inventive solutions. A typical day begins with literacy activities that encourage them to experiment with words and develop their vocabulary and thinking skills. Then it is onto numeracy where problem solving is at the forefront and is integrated into Inquiry as much as possible. The students are taught mathematical concepts which they then apply in a variety of real world contexts. In the afternoons we dive into inquiry where the students explore the world around them across a variety of transdisciplinary themes which lead onto an action or exhibition at the completion of an inquiry.
